Utica and Point Pleasant Mineral Rights and Royalties

The Utica Shale and the underlying Point Pleasant formation lie beneath the Marcellus across much of the region and have been a focus of horizontal drilling in eastern Ohio in particular.

Eastern Ohio and the deep-rights question

Much of Ohio's modern activity targets the Point Pleasant interval, with wells commonly referred to in the Utica play. Counties along and near the Ohio River have seen the most consistent development.

Because older Ohio leases sometimes addressed only shallow formations, deep rights on some tracts were leased separately and later. Which rights are covered is determined by the recorded documents.

Units and decimals

Utica and Point Pleasant units are typically large and built from many tracts. An owner may hold acreage in one unit and unleased acreage nearby that sits in no unit at all.

Comparing the tract description to recorded unit declarations is the way to confirm what is included, rather than assuming based on nearby wells.

Coal and older interests in the same counties

Many eastern Ohio counties with Utica activity also carry coal severances and old shallow-well leases. These are separate interests with separate histories.
