An operator paying royalties needs confidence that it is paying the right people. When ownership is unclear, accounts commonly go into suspense until documentation establishes who inherited the interest.

The same documentation is generally needed before an interest can be conveyed.

Ohio: county Probate Court, often with a recorded certificate of transfer. Pennsylvania: Register of Wills and Orphans' Court. West Virginia: County Clerk and County Commission. Kentucky: District Court, with filings at the County Clerk, sometimes involving an affidavit of descent. Virginia: Circuit Court Clerk.

When two or three generations have passed without filings, the number of owners can grow substantially, and locating everyone becomes part of the work. Families often start by listing known descendants and gathering whatever documents exist.
